The Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ) welcomed the Royal Caribbean's Voyager of the Seas cruise ship last Thursday, on its maiden visit to the newly completed state-of-the-art port in Falmouth, Trelawny.
There were more than 3,000 passengers aboard, with more than 2,500 disembarking to experience the array of cultural entertainment, leisure tours as well as historic site visits. One of the attractions that caught the interest of the passengers was the St Peter's Anglican Church where approximately 400 persons visited the church and made donations.
Total capital
Having invested a total capital of US$170M on the project which commenced in August 2009, the PAJ is pleased to deliver a world-class port that has surpassed global standards based on its navigational capacity.
Minister of Transport and Works Mike Henry was on hand to witness the historic occasion. In expressing appreciation, he said, "I am elated with the successful completion of the project and would like to express sincere appreciation to our main partners, the Royal Caribbean Cruise Limited, for embarking on such a prudent investment which gives Jamaica the opportunity to now compete effectively in the cruise-market industry." He also expressed sincere appreciation to Noel Hylton, president and chief executive officer of the PAJ, along with his team, as well as other key stakeholders, for their tireless effort in bringing the project to fruition.
Based on the strategic partnership between the PAJ and Royal Caribbean Cruise Limited, several mega cruise ships will be arriving on a weekly basis. Other scheduled visits during the week will be Freedom of the Seas on Wednesday, February 23, and Navigator of the Seas on Thursday, February 24, respectively.
The official opening of the Falmouth Port will be on Tuesday, March 22, when Oasis of the Seas makes its maiden call to the port.
